The figure is nice.. but why don't release a Spartacus in historical version?
I mean.. it's a well known story that the real Spartacus was a Thracian and fought as Thraex in the arena, not as Provocator!!!!
And it's quite clear that the figure you are producing it's a Provocator class Gladiator, from the kind of Helm and for the cardiophilax (breastplate).

Another strange thing that is you armed the Provocator with a kind of Sica (curved sword), that was the typical weapon of Thraex.. The Provocator instead fought with a Gladio (Same weapon of Murmillo).
Provocator fought with an armament that mirror the Legionary Armature..
So also the Shield you placed it's wrong.. maybe good for a Thraex but not for a Provocator, because Provocator Shield was a kind of Legionary Shield (so bigger!!)..

So I don't understand why release a Spartacus, not as Thraex.. and with a mix of weapon and armours between a Provocator and a Thraex..
So historically totally wrong!!!
Some extra historical research would be very welcome in the future!

Commendations on your incredible knowledge. You're the smartest guy in the post.

My word - it's a hobby, not a masters thesis.

For the rest of us, thanks, ACI. It's a sweet figure with a nod to a popular TV show. I'm grateful for advancing the beachhead into the classical warrior realm by providing us with another cool gladiator.

Salud!

There is very little evidence of strictly defined gladiatorial classes from his time, and it was rather by the fighter's origin that he would have been categorized. So, Spartacus was a Thracian, but not a Thraex according to the Imperial-era definition. Also, neither the Provocator class of gladiator, nor the Legionary's rectangular scutum were around at this time.

This figure could very well be flawless in terms of historical accuracy, but we do not have enough evidence to say. Consequently, the creators of the Spartacus: Blood and Sand TV series (upon which this figure could be based) were not bound by many strict historical facts. They worked towards showing a fairly straightforward evolution of gladiatorial styles, using an assortment of weaponry and incorporating the influence of foreign fighting styles--at one point quite obviously introducing a "new class." They did this quite well.

Both the characters in the series and this figure use gear that we at least know existed at the time (yes, there is surely some artistic license). It can be assumed that the gladiators of this period served as inspiration, in terms of style and equipment, to those that came later--that which were eventually delineated into the "types of gladiator" of the Imperial-era. They were the "gods of the arena," because they set the groundwork for those that came later.

So Spartacus was not a Thraex or a Provocator, but he was inspiration for both. And that is why this figure (and the TV show) are more "accurate" than most people realize.

No wait wait!!!

It's an hobby and I'm agree with you, but why this lack of research on this subject?

Do you will buy a WWII themed object with helmets and weapons totally wrong???
Me not!!!

Do you will buy a German Soldier, with a Tommy helmet and a Grease Gun?
Can you immagine what will happen if a company would do something like this?
I cannot understand how you can accept this lack of knowledge in this subject!!
Expecially because Aci advertised this as the "REAL" Spartacus.

No my friend, you answer show a lack of knowledge on the subject.

Aci higly advertised this figure as the Real Spartacus, doing this they want to show an historical research that instead is totally wrong.
You talk about "little evidence".. but I wonder where you found this informations!
On Internet?? Or Where? Some Scholastic book??

There are a lot of very interesting books around with SERIOUS research made all over the years, that show you that today we have enough information on Republic era (Spartacus time) to know how was the gladiator classes and how was armed.
They found mosaics, sculptures, tombs, writings, etc.etc.

Spartacus for SURE was coming from Thracia, Plutarch wrote this CLEARLY.
At that time the Roman used to let fight the slave, on the "style" of fight and weaponary of the original Land.
So you have the Samnites, the Thracian and the Gaul (that fough as Murmillo)

This are HISTORICAL facts. It's not a TV series fantasy.

So EVERYTHING on this relesae is Wrong.

- Is wrong the Gladiator Class, because the Provocator was introduced around 100 years after the dead of Spartacus. And because Spartacus was a Thraex.

- Is wrong the Shield. Because is a Parmula (Short shield) that was NOT used by Provocator

- Is wrong how they are mixed togheter. Parmula (Short Shield) with Short Ocrae (Leg protection) is an historical no sense. Parmula shield need a LONG Ocrae, to defend the rest of the leg.

- Is wrong the weapon. Because the curved sword (Sica) goes with Thraex not with Provocator.

So sorry... I cannot accept what "fanboys" are writing here.
The figure is an historical MONSTROSITY, and here you are accepting this probably for lack of knowledge on the subject.

As I said on a post before.. you will accept a release of a German soldier with a Tommy helm and a Grease gun?

This is the SAME.

Doing this wonderful hobby should bring us STUDING the subject. Reading books, and have a sense of critics.

Relax... ACI is following the Hollywood version of history (Sparticus, Gladiator, etc) and there is nothing wrong with that. Some people prefer the movies over real life. That's why Hot Toys is so popular, LOL.

Not at all!!!

Aci advertised this as the "REAL Spartacus" check by yourself:
More PICTURES@p.5 {SPARTACUS IS BACK!} ACI TOYS 1/6 Warriors:Gladiator of Rome 2

This for sure showing that their version was "historically correct" and not based on TV series like CMToys version.

And anyway this is also far away from the TV version (where he was a Thraex on the first few episodes)

So now I have to assume that they changed their mind about that... So he's not anymore the "Real" Spartacus???

BTW... maybe it's for this reason that I don't like Hot Toys

I think most people plan on taking this ACI Toys Spartacus figure and combining it with the CM Toys Champion Armor, but I hear what your saying about the historical part. I personally just like the idea of having a great Whitfield Blood and Sand Spartacus figure on my shelf, regardless of how accurate it is to the real man.

P.S. You should check out some of the stuff Kaustic Plastik has coming out, since your a history buff.

Historically correct or not, it?s still one heck of a figure with good details and excellent craftsmanship. It will pass as a desirable item for many collectors out there including myself. Have fun with it. "Why so serious....?"

Guys.... What happened to all of you?
Where finished the great old times when people discussed in the forums of historical details between Dragon and Did products? Pushing each company to their BEST to improve the historical value of their products?

Soon you will welcome a German soldier carrying a laser blaster saying that is "cool"..

Yes.. it's true.. This hobby is really ended.

Action, I don't think ACI has any real desire to portray a historical figure, here. Everyone knows with a nod and a wink that this is based off of the Starz show. Just like the Roman General is clearly from Gladiator the movie.

If you're after 100% historical subjects, there is another studio doing that right now.

These Hollywood subjects sell really well. To say the hobby is dead is hysterical...

Personally I think it's a nice enough representation of a provocator; couldn't care less about the whole Spartacus angle.

I'd definitely pick it up if I had the funds. Their previous gladiator is one of my personal favorites.

I can?t say I know what ACI meant by ?real? there, but I imagine there are some translation issues (surely, you can show some sympathy in that regard).

I do have a background in this subject, and I would like to see your sources.

Anyways... my point was that--even though the figure is quite obviously representing the TV character?we have so little proper evidence from the historical time period that it is impossible to call something "totally wrong." You simply cannot say the figure?s features are not accurate with accordance to rules that did not exist at the time.

This are HISTORICAL facts. It's not a TV series fantasy.

I did not deny Spartacus? coming from Thrace (Plutarch, interestingly, is the only historian who casts doubt on this--and his wording is notoriously unclear) but that does not mean he fought in the style of an Imperial-era Thraex, which, once again, did not exist at this time in the way you think it did. To clarify, the classifications of gladiator that you are trying to apply to this figure are all from the wrong period. We only know that the early gladiators usually fought in their native style and equipment. I would say this figure is perhaps too fanciful, but again, it is clearly working off the characters from the TV series.

As I said before, Spartacus? time was the inspiration for those who came after. Similitudes not only make sense, but should be expected.

This subject is dealing more in historical concepts than pure facts. Spartacus is a quasi-mythical figure as very little is known about him--we really only know that his revolt caused quite a stir and some important battles that set the stage for what would happen in the next few decades. We don't even know that he ever fought as a gladiator.

I hope it is clear now that you are trying to apply theories that have no place in this period. The figure features equipment that we know existed. The how and why is conjecture, but that?s all there is to do.

This is really funny.. expecially because my sources is my University studies.
Faculty of Geography and History... Ancient History of Mediterranean area.
http://www.ub.edu/web/ub/en/universi...rehistory.html

I hope this is enough to let you say that what you are writing about Spartacus (when you say we know very little about him) it's totally wrong.

As I hope is enough also to let you say that mine are not "theory" and a "conjectures"..

Sorry mate, but HONESTLY you don't know what you are talking about (and it seems you are not the only one here that doesn't know what is talking about)

Because I understand that here a lot of you need some good history lessons I suggest you some good book to read:

- Barry Strauss. The Spartacus War. 2009.
- H.H. Scullard. From the Gracchi to Nero. 1982.
- F.B. Marsh. Roman World 146 to 30 BC. 1967.
- Brent D. Shaw. Spartacus and the Slave Wars. 2001.
- Donald G. Kyle. Spectacles of Death in Ancient Rome. 2001
- Thomas Wiedemann. Emperors and Gladiators. 1995

Just to start with few ones...

Then we will come back discussing about history.

Just to let you show how MUCH are wrong your knowledge on the subject..

Spartacus died around 71 Before Christ (born around 109 Before Christ)

This is a famous funeral monument found in Villa Giulia (Italy) dated between 50 and 100 Before Christ. So EXACTLY the age of Spartacus..

As you can see it show a THRAEX Gladiator (fighting against an Hoplomachus) in a very similar way as everybody knows (Later Imperial Age).. So with a short Parmula (Shield), high Ocrae (Leg protection)..etc.etc.

This is HISTORY my friend... not theories..
