NCAA finds North Carolina not guilty of academic fraud

Published Friday, Aug 31, 2012 at 12:17 pm EDT Last updated 36 minutes and 20 seconds ago

The NCAA has concluded that North Carolina did not commit any NCAA violations related to student-athletes? participation in the African and Afro-American Studies program that included made-up classes and grades.

On Aug. 23, UNC provided an update to the NCAA enforcement staff following a review of the program. The NCAA informed UNC that no NCAA rules appeared to have been broken in this case of academic fraud, UNC announced. However, three other NCAA probes are ongoing.

The classes were available to the general student body, including football and basketball players. However, an internal investigation found countless athletes enrolled in dozens of bogus courses that had little or no instruction. The classes include independent study courses and no-show classes.

The former chairman of the department, Julius Nyang?oro, was forced to retire. Later, UNC inadvertently posted the transcript of former two-sport athlete Julius Peppers online. It was littered with failing grades?and highlighted by better scores in classes that fell under that same area of African and Afro-American study.

UNC first notified the NCAA in August of 2011 that there were potential academic issues in that major. The NCAA launched an investigation and according to a UNC press release, visiting the North Carolina campus several times in the fall of 2011.

?Based on the joint review, UNC and the NCAA staff concluded there were no violations of current NCAA rules or student-athlete eligibility issues related to courses in African and Afro-American Studies. As a result, the NCAA did not add any allegations or include this issue during the University?s appearance in October 2011 before the Committee of Infractions.?

Religious groups vie for new Web domain names

PARIS (Reuters)- Centuries-old theological disputes have broken out in cyberspace as religions aim to influence the future presentation of faith on the Internet.

The forum for the rivalry is not the pulpit or church bulletin, but the website of ICANN, the corporation that oversees the Internet address system and now wants to expand it beyond the usual .com, .org or .net domains.

When ICANN began accepting applications for new names early this year, bids came for extensions such as .catholic, .islam and .bible. Not far behind were critics who challenged many applicants' right to monopolize those and other religious terms.

"I respectfully ask you not to award .bible to a bunch of hardcore Bible-thumpers," wrote one critic of an application by the American Bible Society to manage that extension.

Questioning a Turkish IT company's bid for the .islam domain, Fahd Batayneh of Jordan's National Information Technology Centre asked how it could ensure no pornographers or Muslim extremists would use names with this ending?

ICANN (www.icann.org), the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, is accepting comments on these and other applications for another month and will then evaluate the bids for new extensions, known as top level domains (TLDs).

First results are due next summer. A group awarded a TLD can manage that domain exclusively, renting out addresses that use its extension and rejecting bids it considers unsuitable.

ICANN CAN'T

The religious problems facing this 21st century project are as old as the schisms and heresies that have haunted faiths for ages. Who speaks for Islam? Does the Vatican have a monopoly on the word "catholic"? How should one interpret the Bible?

"I don't think I can solve issues that have been going on for centuries," Akram Atallah, interim head of ICANN, told Reuters by telephone from its Los Angeles headquarters.

"Our goal, at the end of the day, is to provide innovation in the domain name system."

Website owners are now restricted to a few dozen TLDs such as .com and country code domains such as .co.uk. Many of the 1,930 applications for new TLDs came from companies, including Internet giants such as Amazon and Google.

If there are rival bids for the same TLD, ICANN has panels of experts to consider legal, financial and technical factors in making the decision to award a domain name. A dispute resolution process exists if an losing applicant disagrees.

But there won't be geeks consulting Gospels to decide who can have a TLD such as .church.

"We don't look into whether the Vatican has the right to the .catholic name," Atallah said. "Hopefully, the process will get to a conclusion that is satisfying to the majority."

SAUDIS OPPOSE, CHRISTIANS SQUABBLE

Saudi Arabia, the birthplace of Islam, seems to see no hope of a consensus on religious TLDs and opposes them all.

Its Communications and Information Technology Commission filed 163 comments, opposing not only TLDs with Muslim terms such as Islam, halal and Shia but also Catholic and Bible.

It also criticized bids for sex, gay, wine, virgin, dating, porn and other terms that go against its strict moral code.

The Vatican's application for exclusive use of .catholic drew criticism from members of several Protestant churches who also use the term, which comes from the Greek for "universal".

"This request is a move by a powerful group to squelch the voices and rights of other Christians," wrote Dave Daubert, pastor of Zion Lutheran Church in Elgin, Illinois.

Some comments asked if the large Life Covenant Church, based in Oklahoma, would share the .church name it applied for with other Christians who did not hold its evangelical beliefs.

"If something as basic as the Ten Commandments can't be agreed upon, how can the TLD be operated fairly?" one asked.

The American Bible Society would share the .bible domain with "individuals and groups who, regardless of faith, have a healthy respect for the Bible," spokesman Geoffrey Morin said.

Clerics aren't the only ones trying to get into the game.

AGITSys, an Istanbul-based IT company, said it wanted to create "a quality online space for the Muslim faithful" with domain names such as .islam and .halal and would allow Sunnis, Shi'ites and members of other schools of Islam to use it.

"They didn't consult anybody in the Islamic community," said Batayneh from Jordan. "This application should have come from the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation in Jeddah."

Some religions seem to have kept out of the fray entirely. There were no applications for .buddhist, .hindu or .jewish.

Mass evacs ordered over possible Mississippi dam failure

Heavy rainfall from Tropical Storm Isaac is threatening a dam in southern Mississippi, leading local officials to order an evacuation.

Mississippi emergency management officials notified the Tangipahoa Parish, La., government and Louisiana's Governor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (GOSHEP) of an "imminent failure" of the dam at Lake Tangipahoa in Mississippi's Percy Quin State Park. Such a failure could cause additional flooding along the already swollen Tangipahoa River. The park and dam are near the Louisiana border.

The Department of Environmental Quality, looking to relieve the pressure of the dam, may instead continue sandbagging the area or pump water over the dam into the agriculture surrounding areas.

About 19 to 20 families one mile on either side of the river have been ordered to evacuate, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal said, adding that Mississippi authorities may execute a controlled breach of the dam.

Gordon Burgess, president of Tangipahoa Parish in Louisiana, ordered residents who live near the dam to evacuate by 1:30 p.m. ET.

McComb, Miss., Mayor Whitney Rawlings said that the dam was still holding, but there was a 50 percent chance the dam would fail. Mississippi officials said they didn't think the volume of water in the 700-acre lake would add enough flow to the river to cause major flooding, according to The Associated Press.

The town of Kentwood, Miss., was expected to be hit with flooding first. EMA Operations Manager Richard Cogland at Percy Quin Lake says they are lowering the lake level but that the dam is currently still holding.

The evacuation advisory from the Louisiana Emergency Management Agency ordered that "all low lying areas and along the Tangipahoa river" be evacuated due to the potential failure of the Percy Quin dam. A precautionary evacuation of the area south of Lake Tangipahoa in Pike County has been issued by the Pike County Emergency Management Agency.

Engineers from the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality and officials from the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks are assessing the damage at the structure in Percy Quin State Park, according to Mississippi Emergency Operations Center.

As Isaac moves away from New Orleans, the storm is surrounding areas of Louisiana and spinning off tornadoes across Mississippi and Alabama.

The storm caused its first death in Pearl River County, Mississippi today when a male tow truck driver was killed on the job by a tree that fell around midnight, Pearl River Emergency Management Deputy Director Amanda Harris told ABC News. The man's name and age has not yet been released.

"[The county] is completely flooded. And it's only going to get worse." Harris said, adding that rivers and creeks along the county along the Louisiana border will not crest until midnight tonight through 4 a.m.

"The worst is yet to come," Harris said.

Pearl River County conducted four search and rescue operations and it is believe there are no more residents holding out in their homes, Harris said. The county is receiving assistance from FEMA, state agencies and neighboring counties.

A tropical storm warning is in effect for intra-coastal city Louisiana to the Mississippi-Alabama border, including Lake Pontchartrain and Lake Maurepas.

Lt. Vernon Smith of the Pascagoula, Mississippi police tells ABC News that a tornado touched down at approximately 8:20 a.m. just south of town that sits 28 miles from Biloxi.

"It landed right on top of a house, just sat on it," Smith said, adding that people were believed to be inside. "There are people injured." Smith says the tornado is now off the ground and moving through the main part of town, having traveled about a mile since touchdown. Officials are mobilizing emergency crews, but the torrential rain has made roads impassable, with the 2 to 3 feet of water flooding the area too much for even their emergency vehicles to handle.

"We can't get through and we are scrambling," said Smith.

Surrounding areas of Louisiana are expected to see almost two feet of rain and more dangerous floods by the end of the week, while seven tornadoes have spun off from Isaac in Mississippi and Alabama so far.

A tornado that touched down in Gulfport, Miss., has caused the most damage, where significant destruction to homes has been reported. Carlos Redmond, a spokesman for Harrison County Emergency Management, said it's assessing the damage.

"We're looking for daylight. That's what we're looking for. We'll be able to tell a lot more at that time," Redmond told ABC News Thursday.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center said tornadoes are possible along the central Gulf Coast region and parts of the lower Mississippi Valley through Thursday.

The rising waters from rain and flooding have already left locals scrambling up to attics and onto roofs. The main parishes that pose the greatest concern sit around Lake Pontchartrain. With another 4 to 7 inches of rain expected, many officials have expressed worry about the rising waters.

Officials in LaPlace, La., about 25 miles northwest of New Orleans, in St. John the Baptist Parish, called the situation dire.

"I'm afraid the tide is really going to catch some of us off guard tonight," Parish President Layton Ricks told ABC News late Wednesday night.

3100 people have been evacuated in the town since 3 p.m. Wednesday, a National Guard officer told ABC News, while more than 1,000 are waiting for rescue in LaPlace as the city sees its worst flooding in 40 years.

Housing developments, such as the River Forest subdivision where dozens of families were rescued Wednesday, are under 5 feet of water. The Louisiana National Guard said it would be out in force Thursday across the St. John the Baptist Parish, assisting in rescue efforts.

"It's our own little Katrina," said Tania Trege, wife of St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff Mike Trege, describing the situation in Laplace.

Towns southwest of New Orleans have already received about 20 inches of rain, with another 4 to 7 inches possible. New Orleans International Airport has officially received 10 inches of rain so far.

Isaac is expected make a turn toward the north-northwest later today, followed by a turn toward the north on Friday.

A tropical storm warning was still in effect from Cameron, La., to the Mississippi-Alabama state border, according to the Hurricane Center.

An unofficial rainfall total of 22.5 inches was reported in Arabi, La., near the city's 9th Ward on Wednesday. An official report from Audubon Park in New Orleans listed 17 inches of rainfall.

Livingston Parish officials told ABC News that they felt the worst of Isaac at 10 p.m. Wednesday, and expect flooding in the low-lying parts of the parish. Rescue efforts were under way and officials said this will be the first overnight of many water rescues in the area.

Rescue operations are still under way in Plaquemines Parish, where more than 100 people in the parish have been rescued so far. A levee in Plaquemines Parish will be intentionally breached at some point Thursday to relieve pressure on it. That area has been under mandatory evacuation.

More than 725,000 homes and businesses throughout Louisiana were without power as of 2 a.m. Police reported few problems with looting.

In Mississippi, Highway 90 remains shut down, with much of area now submerged in water. 30,000 customers are without power in Gulfport, Miss., alone, where an apparent tornado spawned by the storm ripped a house from ground.

In Biloxi, powerful winds are ravaging the city as residents begin to worry about raw sewage and mold.

President Obama declared federal emergencies in Louisiana and Mississippi late Wednesday, according to a statement from the White House. The disaster declarations free up federal aid for affected areas.

Forecasters expected Isaac to move inland over the next several days, dumping rain on drought-stricken states across the nation's midsection before finally breaking up over the weekend. The storm was expected to weaken to a tropical depression Thursday, according to the Hurricane Center.

ABC News' Max Golembo and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Syrian opposition group not up to job, says ex-member

DUBAI/AMMAN (Reuters) - Egypt called on Thursday for intervention to halt bloodshed in Syria, telling a meeting of 120 nations it was their duty to stand against the "oppressive regime" of Bashar al-Assad, prompting a Syrian walkout.

President Mohamed Mursi, elected two months ago after a popular uprising toppled Egypt's long-standing leader Hosni Mubarak, said Assad had lost legitimacy in his fight to crush a 17-month-old revolt in which 20,000 people have been killed.

Mursi's scathing speech to a summit of non-aligned leaders, hosted by Assad's Shi'ite ally Iran, prompted Syria's foreign minister to accuse the moderate Sunni Islamist leader of inciting further bloodshed in Syria.

The political broadside against the Syrian president came as rebels said they shot down a fighter plane in northern Syria, where his air force has been bombarding opposition-held towns in a fierce counter-offensive against insurgents.

It was the latest strike by Assad's foes on the air power he has increasingly relied on to crush the uprising. Rebels said this week they attacked a northern military air base and shot down a helicopter that was bombarding a district of Damascus.

"The bloodshed in Syria is our responsibility on all our shoulders and we have to know that the bloodshed cannot stop without effective interference from all of us," Mursi said.

"We all have to announce our full solidarity with the struggle of those seeking freedom and justice in Syria, and translate this sympathy into a clear political vision that supports a peaceful transition to a democratic system of rule that reflects the demands of the Syrian people for freedom."

His comments prompted Syria's Foreign Minister Walid al-Moualem to storm out of the meeting, complaining that Mursi was inciting fighters to "continue shedding Syrian blood", Syrian state television said.

ASSAD SAYS NEEDS TIME

Assad, in his first television interview since rebels took their fight into the heart of Damascus and the country's biggest city, Aleppo, said on Wednesday his fight to put down the uprising was going well but needed more time.

"Everyone wants this battle to be completed in days or weeks but this isn't reasonable, because we are in the middle of a regional and international struggle and it needs time to be resolved," he said.

Mainly peaceful protests were met with force by Assad's military, and the uprising has degenerated into a civil war with sectarian overtones and regional dimensions. The mainly Sunni Muslim rebels are backed by regional Sunni powers, particularly Gulf Arab states and Turkey.

Assad, whose Alawite community is an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam, has support from Iran, a rival of Gulf Arab states and Western powers. Lebanon's Shi'ite militia Hezbollah has also shown solidarity with the Syrian president.

The role of regional powers has assumed greater significance because of deadlock at U.N. Security Council, where diplomatic stalemate has marginalized the major powers.

U.S., Russian and Chinese ministers are not expected to attend Thursday's U.N. Security Council meeting on Syria, underlining the fact that both Assad's critics and backers on the council see little prospect of it taking any action.

"We wanted a resolution on humanitarian issues, but we faced a double refusal," said a French diplomat, whose country will chair the meeting in New York.

"The United States and Britain believe we have reached the end of what can be achieved at the Security Council, and Moscow and Beijing said that such a resolution would have been biased."

Nearly a year and a half after the uprising erupted, Assad's political foes are equally divided.

A member of the Syrian National Council, which once hoped to win international endorsement as the country's leadership-in-waiting, resigned this week complaining it was not doing enough to back the revolt and must be replaced by a new political authority.

"My sense was that the SNC was not up to facing the increasing challenges on the ground," Basma Kodmani, the latest council member to break from the SNC, told Reuters.

PLANE "SHOT DOWN"

The Syrian Martyrs Brigade said on Thursday it brought down a plane near the town of al-Thayabiya. Video footage on Al Arabiya television showed what appeared to be smoke in the sky and a person parachuting down. An army helicopter hovered over the area, apparently in search of the pilot.

"The brigade has started targeting the regime's air assets, including military airports," a member of the group said from Idlib, declining to give further details.

As well as targeting rebels, Assad's jets and artillery have also struck at least 10 bakeries in Aleppo province in the last three weeks, killing dozens of people as they waited in line to buy bread, the U.S.-based Human Rights Watch said.

It said the attacks were either deliberate or done without care to avoid the hundreds of civilians forced to queue outside a dwindling number of bakeries in Syria's biggest city, a front line in the civil war.

One attack two weeks ago killed around 60 people and wounded more than 70, it said.

The fighting around Aleppo, Damascus and the southern province of Deraa, where protests against Assad first erupted in March 2011, has prompted waves of refugees to flood into neighboring Turkey and Jordan.

Turkey urged the United Nations to protect displaced Syrians inside their own country, to take the pressure off its crowded refugee camps, and France said it was studying the issue of buffer zones in Syria, an idea Assad dismissed as unrealistic.

What in the Hell Is This? [Video]

Nokia has a new teaser video on its YouTube page. In it a girl—a very stylish girl—rides her bike along the waterfront of a Finnish neighborhood (well, presumably Finnish). At the end appears the text "Things Are About to Change" with a date: 9.05.12. Of course, this is the date of the Nokia event next week. And if we had to guess, it will have something to do with Windows Phone 8. But what in the hell does that have to do with a girl on a bike? More »

Outsource office work, increase productivity!

Your time is your money.

If you?re like many businesses these days, you?re probably up to your eyeballs in work with a small staff. Your time is limited and you don?t have the time or resources to waste on tasks that can be outsourced.

That?s where I come in.

Virtual assistants are a godsend to business owners these days. We can work around the clock remotely on office tasks that you?d otherwise have to have someone in person to tackle. This increases your business productivity tenfold, which frees you up to handle more important tasks.

Time is Money - ProductivityAre you feeling a bit overwhelmed with the work piling up on your desk? It?s no problem at all for me, because I?ve been doing this full time online since 1998 and can take away some of your burden. Not only will I be able to take away stress, we?d be working together in an independent contractor capacity, so there?s no need to worry yourself with full-time salary, benefits, health insurance or costly training sessions.

Virtual office assistants are often more skilled than typical assistants also. For instance, many are well-versed in WordPress design, SEO practices, desktop publishing, graphics and more and can do it faster and more efficiently. This means you have a greater variety of work that can be passed along.

As time goes on, we?re becoming an increasingly digital society. People are conducting more business than ever online and with cell phone and tablet apps. When?s the last time you went to the bank? I?ll bet that you conducted business via ATM or online rather than spending time speaking with a teller and filling out forms. The internet has afforded us the convenience of streamlining our typical life practices to free up time for other activities.

Hiring a virtual assistant is no different. You?re hiring an independent contractor that likely earns a full-time living from home and whom you?ll likely never meet in person! While this is the case, this person completes just as much work, if not more than a traditional office assistant would.

Business productivity is not something that should be compromised. Every minute wasted is a potential dollar squandered. In order to keep up with the competition and your own standards, increasing productivity is a must. The world and business climate are rapidly changing, so the idea of hiring a virtual assistant will likely become the norm sooner than later. Outsourcing projects/tasks?has always been a business practice, this is just the new format.

Think of a virtual assistant as a value-added asset. Contact Office To-Go today so you can focus on your clients, your strengths and building your business.

Tymoshenko loses appeal, stays in Ukraine jail

A Ukrainian high court rejected an appeal on Wednesday by former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko against her conviction for abuse of office, leaving her in jail and Ukraine's relations with the West severely strained.

Tymoshenko's defense lawyer said the ruling by a three-judge panel had been steered by President Viktor Yanukovich for political reasons.

"These findings have no relation to justice," Serhiy Vlasenko told journalists after judge Olexander Yelfimov ruled that lower courts had delivered "correct decisions on the crimes of Tymoshenko."

"This is a decision of Yanukovich to keep Tymoshenko in prison," Vlasenko said.

Western leaders condemned the seven-year prison term meted out to the 51-year-old opposition leader in October as political persecution, and blocked strategic agreements on political association and a free-trade zone with the European Union.

But despite months of chiding by the European Union and the United States, Yanukovich has refused to act to secure her release. No one had expected her to be released on Wednesday.

Yanukovich did not immediately react to Vlasenko's comments, though in tough remarks last Friday he said he would not negotiate integration with the European Union at the price of allowing it to interfere in her case.

Story: Ukraine prosecutor urges court to uphold Tymoshenko guilt

In Brussels, the European Union urged Ukraine to reform its judicial system "to redress the effects of selective justice" like that seen in Tymoshenko's case.

"We stress the importance for the Ukrainian authorities to take concrete steps to address the systemic problems of the judiciary," Michael Mann, a spokesman for EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, said.

Tymoshenko, recognizable for her peasant-style hair braid and known for fiery rhetoric, was not in court because of persistent back trouble which has kept her confined to a state-run hospital in eastern Ukraine.

About 300 of her supporters gathered outside the courtroom, chanting slogans such as "Yulia - Freedom!" and "Keep convicts inside and get Yulia out!" They lowered a mock coffin into the ground outside the courtroom to symbolize the death of justice.

The continued incarceration of Tymoshenko - by far the most vibrant opposition figure on Ukraine's political landscape - is certain to figure as a major issue in an October 28 legislative election.

Yanukovich's Party of the Regions goes into that election with the government highly unpopular over reforms that have increased taxes on small businesses and raised retirement ages, and it will have to work hard to retain its majority.

The abuse of office conviction relates to a gas deal that Tymoshenko brokered with Russia in 2009 when she was prime minister. The Yanukovich government says the agreement was reckless and saddled Ukraine with an enormous price for strategic supplies of gas which is taking a toll on the stressed economy.

'Shameful'
Tymoshenko has denied betraying the national interest, with her lawyers arguing that the gas negotiation with Russia was a political act which did not amount to a criminal action.

Ukrainian state prosecutors said Tymoshenko's guilt was clearly established at her trial last year.

In Wednesday's judgment, the three-member panel said: "The judges of the court have reached the conclusion that the appeal cannot be satisfied ... The judges believe that the previous courts reached correct decisions on the crimes of Tymoshenko."

Tymoshenko's daughter Yevgenia, who has sought international support for her mother's cause, told journalists: "Today we again received a shameful decision which proves that a dictatorship is establishing itself in Ukraine."

She said the ruling would be the basis for a fresh appeal to the Strasbourg-based European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).

The authorities have ignored Western criticism and piled up fresh charges against Tymoshenko for alleged past misdeeds.

In a separate trial, which has been adjourned several times because of Tymoshenko's ill health, she is accused of embezzlement and tax evasion going back to alleged offences when she was in business in the 1990s.

Lawyers for Tymoshenko pressed her case at the ECHR on Tuesday, arguing that her pre-trial detention had been unlawful and that she had been subjected to degrading treatment in prison.

The former prime minister was a leader of the 2004 Orange Revolution protests against sleaze and cronyism in Ukraine that derailed Yanukovich's first bid for the presidency.

She served two terms as prime minister under President Viktor Yushchenko, but the two fell out and their partnership dissolved into bickering and infighting.

She narrowly lost to Yanukovich in a run-off for the presidency in February 2010 after a bitter campaign.

EX3D Dual View Eyewear collection offers unparalleled gaming ...

The latest EX3D Dual View Eyewear collection will deliver a selection of comfortable special gaming glasses in the UK, where it will be available from next month onwards. Allowing multi-play gamers to view only their own screen in full screen glory, you can be sure that your gaming experience will be enhanced, although I would say that it will not be revolutionary. In fact from November onwards, gamers are able to enjoy improved visual clarity courtesy of the new EX3D Call of Duty Gaming Eyewear, but if you happen to be at IFA 2012 Berlin, Germany, you will be able to catch a glimpse of both pair of glasses in action.

The EX3D Dual View Game Eyewear will cost ?35 in the UK, where it comes in a pair of two glasses, one with two left lenses while the other will carry two right lenses. They are able to individually filter passive 3D signals for players who play a split-screen game, letting each player see only their own half of the screen even when gaming using the same TV set, hence helping cut down on cheating while increasing the competitive level.

As for the Call of Duty Black Ops II Eyewear, this officially licensed peripheral will come with high contrast lenses that are said to increase subtle game details and improve shooting accuracy, although I am quite sure that your gaming reflexes will also have a rather big part to play. Not only that, the adjustable nose pads enable one to enjoy a contoured, custom fit, where it will be priced from ?25. [Press Release]

My main interests are industrial/organizational psychology, HR management and of course, securities and the financial markets. I became interested in trading and investing in stocks a few years ago by pure chance and curiosity. After learning some of the basics in 2003, I began to trade in full force in 2004. Although I've been trading for only a few years, I have learned much about stocks, and analyzing charts in this relatively short time span. My experience and chart reading skills are my edge in successfully navigating the stock market. My strategy and discipline is a blend of trader and stock picker. My style of trading has helped me find some of the current markets top winners in their infancy. In addition to my own personal trading and investing, I also manage assets and portfolios for close friends and family. My goals are to continue to improve and refine my trading/investing strategies in order to further enhance my performance in the market. Eventually, I would like to establish my own investment/asset management firm.

Saudi Arabia arrests suspected militants with al-Qaeda links

JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia (Reuters) - Saudi authorities arrested a group of suspected al Qaeda-linked militants in Riyadh, the Interior Ministry said in a statement on state news agency SPA on Sunday.

"After intense surveillance of the cell it was revealed that they have reached an advanced stage in their plan to implement their goals, which include preparing and setting explosives and testing them outside of Riyadh," the ministry said.

Security forces arrested six members of the cell - all Yemeni nationals - after arresting their leader, a Saudi, and questioning him, the statement said.

The ministry has worked with Western intelligence agencies to foil al Qaeda attacks planned in Yemen, and although a 2003-2006 al Qaeda campaign inside Saudi Arabia was suppressed, the group's regional wing based in Yemen, al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), has sworn to bring down the ruling al-Saud family.

Saudi Arabia has arrested thousands of suspected militants since the 2003-2006 attacks on residential compounds for foreign workers and on Saudi government facilities, killing dozens.

The United States has poured aid into Yemen to stem the threat of attacks from AQAP and to try to prevent any spillover of violence into Saudi Arabia, the world's top oil exporter.

In 2006 and 2008 security forces foiled planned attacks by militants against oil installations in its Eastern Province.

The latest arrests and investigation had also revealed a connection with a militant cell in Jeddah and led to the arrest of one of its members, a Saudi, who is accused of preparing chemicals to be used in explosive devices, the ministry said.

The last attempted attack in Saudi Arabia that was made public was a 2010 attempt to assassinate Prince Mohammed bin Nayef, the assistant Interior Minister and head of the security service.

Web Writing Tips ? Mistakes To Avoid In Web Content Creation

Web Content

Web writing is now a hot career. A lot of peopleboth working in the corporate world and notare into writing for the internet. It?s comparatively easy than other online jobs particularly SEO article writing for those who have the knack for being word mercenaries. Besides, web writing tips abound everywhere so even the first-timers will not remain clueless on how to get the job done. In the following, instead of talking more how-to tips, we will talk about the common mistakes you should not commit when writing web content.

The use of business speak. Web content creation is about writing in simple, understandable, and interesting manner. Business speak, including jargons and technical terms, has no room in this kind of writing. This is because online readers don?t have the time and patience in deciphering it. What they want are plain but informative and engaging articles. Hence, if you want to thrive in the industry, you?d better learn how to do away with trying too hard to sound smart.

The magnification of features. Web writing tips frequently talk about magnifying the features of what your topic is. While it?s OK to present the characteristics of something, it can?t do much when it comes to increasing the effectiveness of an article. See, presenting benefits can go a lot farther. If you tell your readers how they can benefit from choosing what you?re offering, then they can promptly perform the action you want them to do. Say, if you want them to visit a site or purchase a product, show them the great reasons why and they?ll surely move.

The writing for the wrong audience. Most web content writers don?t recognize the vitality of knowing who they are writing for. See, when you create an article, it makes a whole lot of difference if you have a picture of who you are writing it to. This way, you can choose your words and tone appropriately. Your way of speaking with a professor is different with your way of speaking with a child, right? Hence, you must always write for the right audience in your online business today.

Writing too much. Many writers think that the more words they write, the smarter they appear. But, this style doesn?t work among the online public. This is because they are never fond of reading lengthy write-ups. They only have patience to go through 200 to 500-word long articles. Anything higher can already be taxing. Thus, as a writer, it is your job to provide the information they need in the most concise and comprehensible way possible.

Publishing before proofreading. This sounds a stupid mistake but sadly, a significant number of writers still err on this. They click the ?publish? button without even ensuring that all the words are spelled correctly. Consequently, their reputations get hurt by their seemingly minor slip-ups. The truth is, all the lists of web writing tips must emphasize the necessity of proofreading. It doesn?t only make your articles look better but your repute a lot higher too.

A Modest Proposal For Sequestration of CO2 In the Antarctic

First time accepted submitter Alienwise writes "Judith Curry reports a scientific concept of an atmospheric CO2 sequestration plant. It would be based in the Antartic to profit from the cold weather, which would facilitate the creation of CO2 snow ? which would then be buried. The plant could be powered by windmills." The lead author has agreed to let Curry link to a copy of the final manuscript, if you'd like to read more.

Cancer-casting felon in tax dodging magic underwear launches ...

Twitter conservatives race to defend him from an OUTRAGED press corp, noting that Romney?s offense is not that he made the joke, just that the joke itself wasn?t funny ? and concluding that Mitt really should stick to the economy and various invocations of the word ?delightful? and leave the comedy to those who don?t typically wear spiritual undergarments.

So he got off easy, did Mitt.? This time.? Meaning, I don?t think we?ll hear any very public, principled calls for him to step down just yet.? Although it should be noted that Twitter conservatives reserve the right to lick a finger and keep it in the air just in case there?s some shift in the political winds they feel the need to get out ahead of.? For freedom.

update: Oh. Akin held a press conference. He?s staying in.? And is attacking McCaskill.

Of course, he?s unelectable now ? because he made a dubious medical claim in an inelegant way and most certainly not because an entire conga line of Republicans, led by the rightside Twitterverse and the Rove cabal that doesn?t even exist, signed their names to shit saying the moronic extremist woman hater rape apologist and his outlandish belief in the magic cooter has to get out of the race, then spent the next few days trying to get the selfish selfish man (who is only worried about his own career and reputation, not the future of the country, like those more polished and perfect patriots who insist he do as they say) to bend to their wills instead of covering for him while going after tax cheat ObamaCare strumpet McCaskill.

Just so we?re clear.

Onavo Extend 1.2.6 (for Android)

If you're trying to shave off some of the fat from your monthly smartphone bill, you can start by cutting down on mobile data consumption. Onavo Extend 1.2.6 (free) is like a diet pill for heavy Android data users without unlimited data plans. Its compression technology significantly reduces data consumption?claiming to save 500MB a month on average?with virtually no effort on your part. Onavo Extend is especially valuable when traveling abroad, where every megabyte of data comes at a premium.

Unfortunately, only a minority of Android users can use this app, as it requires Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and above. I tested Onavo on a Samsung Galaxy Nexus running 4.0.3. I turned on every compression setting, turned off Wi-Fi, and took Onavo for a spin through some Web pages, social networking apps, email, and maps.

How Does the Magic Work?
Onavo inserts itself between your Android device and the Internet. All the data that would normally go straight to your phone or tablet goes through Onavo's cloud-based servers first. Onavo compresses photos, emails, and other data hogs, and delivers lower-quality versions to your device. You can adjust the quality of images so that nothing is noticeable to the naked eye. The newest version of Onavo caches copies of frequently accessed data to your device's SD card, in a universal cache space so less data is required and content loads faster. Most Web apps already cache, but data is stored in different locations. Onavo's universal cache shares cached content with other apps and browsers to cut down data usage.

Furthermore, Onavo claims it caches almost in real time, so fetched data isn't outdated. As an end user, you'll notice this if you quickly flip back and forth between pages in your browser.? When the cache isn't updated fast enough, previous pages won't show the most recent information.?

Onavo doesn't compress video or audio streams (which is a good thing?I'd rather compromise on images than in music or video quality). By compressing all your photos, emails, and apps, Onavo does free up bandwidth for your multimedia appetite. It is especially effective on data hogs like push email, RSS readers, Twitter, StumbleUpon, and Facebook.

Quick Setup
To setup Onavo, you first need to let the app create a VPN connection to its servers, which is simply a matter of launching the app and hitting "Approve" when it asks for permission to make the connection. You lose VPN connection any time your phone is offline, so it takes a little training to remember to switch it back on every time you step out of a network-free zone. ?In my infinite laziness I wish Onavo automatically tried making a connection every time my phone went online.

Once you're connected, the app displays a split-screen homepage with your total bandwidth savings in megabytes up top, and at the bottom it contextualizes this number in terms of what you can use these extra megabytes for. There's also an option to fetch data reports that break down your data usage by source, over a week or month period. Later versions of Android calculate data use already, but Onavo's reports are much prettier.

Performance
In half, a day I saved 3.8MB on my device. To put this in context, I can now share an "extra 111 photos on Facebook" or read "an extra 8,957 tweets." At this rate, the app told me I would save 432.5MB this month. Pretty sweet.

In Opera Mini, which also uses server-side compression technology, the result is faster browsing speeds. The opposite is true in Onavo. In fact, in the Speed Test benchmark, my Galaxy Nexus with Onavo clocked 10.25 Mbps download speeds and 12.29 Mbps upload speeds. It was faster without Onavo, clocking in 17.12 Mbps down and 12.87 Mbps up. However in real-life, I didn't notice any major difference in speed.

Onavo lets you choose from three compression settings for images. On low quality (highest compression setting), Web images tend to look blurry and pixilated, though not unrecognizable. They look much better on medium quality, and I was barely able to discern a difference when using the high quality setting versus turning Onavo off entirely. Regular text on websites is unaffected by the compression, so you never have to worry about a page becoming unreadable. Even when you zoom in, text is every bit as clear as it is with data compression turned off.

Onavo compresses Exchange email; you can also set up your Gmail and Yahoo! accounts as an Exchange server if you want to compress their data. If you choose to use email compression, Onavo reformats your emails to plain text, so it loses formatting techniques like bold, underline, images. If you want to see the full, uncompressed email, you can scroll down a bit further and tap on the Download Full Message button.

?

How Secure?
By serving as a middleman between your device and the Internet, Onavo can technically see all the data flowing through your device. Onavo's execs have made a big deal out of telling everyone that the data is anonymized, but if you're still worried you can encrypt your data. Using HTTPS is the easiest way to start.

Onavo's system runs on Amazon's EC2 cloud servers. Its servers are protected by multiple layers of security, and nothing is actually stored except for aggregated and anonymized metadata, such as what types of apps you're using?this information is used to help illustrate your data usage and savings, as well as for research to help improve the service. Onavo cannot read or compress encrypted SSL traffic. The only exception is Microsoft Exchange mail traffic, which requires the user's explicit approval. This can be turned off from the app's Settings.

Onavo Extend is a must-have utility for those of us watching our data consumption, and a well-deserved Editors' Choice app for Android utilities. Onavo Extend doesn't compress video or audio, but it reduces a significant amount of overall data use by compressing ?emails, photos, and apps.
