J.R. Smith Ejected: Elbow To Jason Terry Ends Game 3 For Knicks' Swingman (VIDEO)

Jr Smith

New York Knicks' J.R. Smith is ejected from the game after fouling Boston Celtics' Jason Terry during the fourth quarter of New York's 90-76 win in Game 3 of a first round NBA basketball playoff series in Boston Friday, April 26, 2013.

BOSTON (AP) ? New York Knicks swingman J.R. Smith was ejected from Friday night's playoff game against Boston for elbowing Celtics guard Jason Terry in the face.

Terry was guarding Smith with about 7 minutes left in the game when Smith swung his elbows widely, catching Terry in the face. Terry popped up and had to be restrained by teammates, coach Doc Rivers and referee Dan Crawford.

The officials immediately called a foul, and after video review ruled it a Flagrant 2, meaning an automatic ejection.

The Knicks entered the game with a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series.

Smith, the NBA's Sixth Man of the Year, finished with 15 points, four rebounds and three assists.

Hospital roof collapses in India, injuring 8

(AP) ? Part of a hospital building collapsed in central India on Friday after its roof came crashing down, injuring at least eight people, an official said.

More than a dozen people were rescued after being trapped in the rubble of the Kasturba Gandhi Hospital in Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh state, state minister Babu Lal Gaur said. None of the injuries were serious.

Police officer Upendra Jain said about two dozen people were believed to be on the first floor of the women's medical ward when its roof crashed down. The cause of the collapse was not immediately known.

The Press Trust of India news agency quoted local administrator Nikunj Shrivastava as saying that two people were killed in the building collapse. Shrivastava could not be immediately reached for comment.

The hospital is operated by state-run Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd., Gaur said. Bhopal is about 750 kilometers (465 miles) south of New Delhi.

Building collapses are common in India as builders try to cut corners by using substandard materials, and as multistory structures are built with inadequate supervision. The massive demand for housing around cities and pervasive corruption often result in builders adding unauthorized floors or constructing illegal buildings.

Earlier this month, at least 72 people were killed when an eight-story residential building being constructed illegally near Mumbai, India's financial capital, came crashing down in the worst building collapse in the country in decades.

Another 70 people were injured when the building in the Mumbai suburb of Thane caved in on April 4.

Ex-official arrested in probe of prosecutor slayings

By Lisa Maria Garza

KAUFMAN, Texas (Reuters) - A former justice of the peace in Kaufman County, Texas, whose home was searched as part of the probe into the killings of the local district attorney, his wife and a prosecutor, has been arrested on suspicion of threatening violence, officials said on Saturday.

Eric L. Williams, 46, was arrested on Friday on charges of making a "terroristic" threat, which generally involves a threat to commit violence, according to the Kaufman County jail website. Kaufman County is just east of the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

It was not immediately clear whether the alleged threat had any connection to the slayings, which along with the March slaying of the Colorado prisons chief raised concerns about public officials being targeted by criminal elements.

Kaufman County District Attorney Mike McLelland and his wife, Cynthia, were found shot to death on March 30 at their home near Forney, 22 miles from Dallas, two months after Assistant District Attorney Mark Hasse was gunned down execution-style. McLelland had publicly vowed to capture Hasse's killer.

The pace of the investigation into those deaths appeared to quicken on Saturday after local media reported that FBI agents and Texas Rangers had searched several storage units in the town of Seagoville as part of the probe into the slayings. The Dallas Morning News reported that a car had been found in one of the units.

It was not immediately clear who the units belonged to. The New York Times quoted an unnamed law enforcement official as saying the search was "possibly very significant". An FBI spokeswoman did not immediately return calls seeking comment on the developments.

Asked about the progress of the probe into the killings, Kaufman County Sheriff's spokesman Lieutenant Justin Lewis told Reuters late on Saturday: "Nobody has been charged at this time."

SEARCH WARRANT

Williams, who a jail official confirmed was being held on $3 million bail, has not been named as a suspect in the slayings. He lost his position as justice of the peace in Kaufman County after being convicted last year of theft, according to local media reports.

His attorney, David Sergi, said in a statement on Friday that his client "has cooperated with law enforcement and vigorously denies any and all allegations", according to local news station KXAS-TV, an NBC affiliate.

Sergi did not return calls on Saturday.

Kyle Bradford, a spokesman for the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Texas Rangers, said authorities served a search warrant at Williams' home on Friday.

Richard Mohundro, who lives next door to Williams' house in Kaufman County, said he watched from his porch as police poured into the neighborhood on Friday afternoon. "There were cops everywhere and I thought, 'Oh my God'," he said.

Officers were there until around midnight and took out bins filled with documents and computers, Mohundro said.

After the slayings of Hasse and the McLellands, investigators had tested Williams for gun residue and they examined his cell phone, but they did not name him as a suspect, according to the New York Times.

The theft conviction against Williams last year centered on his removal of computer monitors from a public building, according to a report on the trial from The Forney Post newspaper. Hasse prosecuted the case, according to the paper.

The arrest of Williams marked at least the third time investigators in the case have taken a person into custody over an alleged threat, and came as Texas authorities were seeking to double an existing $200,000 reward to find the killers.

The Texas Rangers arrested a man on April 4 accused of using Facebook to threaten violence against an assistant district attorney. Two days earlier, authorities arrested another man suspected of making a telephone threat against a county official on a tip line set up for the case.

Anti-euro party a wildcard in German elections

(AP) ? It's a spectacle that Germans are getting tired of: southern European protesters burning their flags and waving placards comparing Chancellor Angela Merkel to Nazi leader Adolf Hitler, all in reaction to Berlin's insistence on reforms and austerity in return for bailout funds.

And it's enough to make people like Berlin businessman Horst Freiberg, who never felt much love for the euro currency, pine more than ever for the return of the German mark.

"I'd immediately vote for a party that wants to abolish the euro," said Freiberg, who has run a small business selling ink stamps in central Berlin for more than 40 years. "How can you have one currency with banana republics like Cyprus and Greece? And they always accuse us of being Nazis. It's sick."

Such sentiments are still the exception in Germany, where a sense of obligation to help fellow Europeans in distress is rooted in shame for the crimes of the Third Reich. But a new political party hopes to capitalize on simmering fears that the euro crisis could deepen and drag down Europe's biggest economy. It aims to garner enough votes from people like Freiberg in September elections to reach the 5 percent minimum needed for seats in Parliament.

Called Alternative for Germany, the main goal of the party founded by academics and economists is the "orderly dissolution" of the euro, said Frauke Petry, a business owner and party spokeswoman. The stance puts the party in sharp opposition to Merkel's position that there can be no Europe without the preservation of the single currency, with her repeated insistence that "if the euro fails, Europe will fail." While still a fledgling movement, the new party could hurt Merkel by sapping support from her main coalition partner ? which she has relied on for a stable government.

"For us the euro is at the heart of many problems," Petry told The Associated Press. "The way decisions are being made in Europe right now shows that many democratic mechanisms don't work anymore," she said. Alternative for Germany wants to introduce Swiss-style national referendums so voters can have a say on important matters ? including economic rescue packages.

For all the talk about what they don't like, however, the party has been short on what they do like and its leaders were slammed in an editorial this week in the top-selling Bild newspaper as "political amateurs."

The conservative tabloid has never shied away from accusing southern Europeans of being lazy, nor has it stopped deploring the cost Germany shoulders to bail out other nations, but turning against the euro itself remains unthinkable.

"They can craftily explain what is wrong with rescuing the euro, but they have no concept on how the future of Europe should look," Bild wrote.

Experts believe the party has little chance of garnering enough of the protest vote to reach the 5 percent threshold. But it could draw enough voters away from Chancellor Angela Merkel's center-right coalition to force her into an alliance with the opposition or give the opposition an outright majority.

More than 7,000 people have applied to join the party even before its founding congress in Berlin on Sunday, said Petry.

"There is space for an anti-euro party in Germany," said Oskar Niedermayer, a political scientist at Berlin's Free University. "So far this position hasn't really been represented in the German party system."

Underlining the potential appeal, a recent poll showed that even though 69 percent of Germans now back the euro ? up from about 50 percent last year ? a significant minority of 27 percent said they'd like to see a return to the mark. The survey of 1,003 people was conducted April 2-3 for the business daily Handelsblatt.

Abandoning the euro currency would have significant costs, especially for Germany as a heavily export-oriented economy. According to analysts' estimates, it could easily knock down the country's annual output by a double digit percentage figure.

"I think the Germans know, and to some extent accept, that they have to pay the bill for saving the euro," said Ursula Weidenfeld, an economist and author. "They just want to make sure that they aren't paying more than necessary."

Other nations like the Netherlands, Austria and Finland have also insisted on the same austerity measures that Germany has demanded in exchange for European bailouts, but as the bloc's largest economy and the largest single contributor to the funds, most of the anger has been directed at Germany and Merkel.

Some of Merkel's voters are now beginning to wonder whether their country ? and their savings ? should be tied to the struggling euro project, and Weidenfeld said support for the euro "could quickly change if a new rescue package has to be negotiated."

Should the eurozone's woes spread to fully engulf Italy or Spain ? the bloc's third- and fourth-largest economies ? and require them to ask for a bailout, German voters could panic, said Niedermayer.

In Germany's election in September, the issue poses the greatest threat to the Free Democratic Party, Merkel's junior coalition partner which has a pro-business platform. Because the party has polled only slightly above five percent, even the loss of a few thousand voters could mean disaster.

"It's not impossible that this new party could sap half a percent from the FDP and thereby kick them out of parliament," said Niedermayer. That could create a huge headache for Merkel, who may find it hard to form a workable majority in parliament without the FDP.

Merkel's own party, too, could suffer if conservative voters see Alternative for Germany as a credible way to express their frustration about her leadership.

Economist Rudolf Hickel told Germany's Deutsche Welle, however, that even though there is anti-euro sentiment out there, Alternative for Germany doesn't have broad enough appeal to effectively tap it.

"They are professors and frustrated economists," he said. "If the party were headed by a populist, I'd consider them dangerous."

Iran urged to boost nuke safety review after quake

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) ? The head of the Gulf states' main political bloc is urging Iran to join an international accord on nuclear safety following an earthquake near the country's lone energy-producing reactor.

Abdullatif bin Rashid al-Zayani, secretary-general of the Gulf Cooperation Council, opened a meeting Sunday in Riyadh to discuss nuclear safety issues after last week's 6.1 magnitude quake about 96 kilometers (60 miles) southeast of Bushehr, the site of Iran's reactor.

The quake killed at least 37 people. Iran says there was no damage to the reactor and insists it was built to withstand far stronger quakes.

Al-Zayani urged Iran to join the U. N.'s Convention on Nuclear Safety, which allows greater review by the U.N.'s atomic watchdog agency. But Iran is part of other U.N. pacts to report any nuclear accidents.

Build Your Brand With Internet Promotion Know How

Build Your Brand With Internet Promotion Know How

Even though you might be rearing to go, you should take the time to do your reasearch. Look through the contents of this article to learn a thing or two.

If you want to increase your eCommerce site?s PageRank, you should offer a temporary promotion. You could buy your PageRank if it is a good deal, since deal sites and consumer sites will want to link with you. This is the same concept as a company selling an item at a loss, with the expectation that it will turn into a profitable situation at a later time.

TIP! You want to entice your audience as much as you can, so they can know more information about the product and be more apt to buy. They will feel they know more about what they are buying.

Internet promotion is an ever-changing phenomenon and researching up-to-date techniques will prove helpful. Choose someone who knows Internet marketing backwards and forwards to teach you the ropes. There are many out there that can give you a fresh perspective for either free or at a small cost. Find a previously proven system that works for you. Keep in mind that while you may experience a slow start, in the end it will be worth all of the time and effort you have put into it.

Online advertising is a great way to get attention and draw people to your site. With the right investment, you can get your company and your products seen by a vast audience. A website that has a steady, high volume of traffic can expose your ads to a limitless number of people, every one of whom is a potential buyer.

TIP! Internet marketing does not have to take place solely on the internet. For example, you can invite your advertisers and customers to an event you are hosting.

Make a point of shipping related free samples or discount coupons with your products. People appreciate these coupons and free samples, and as a result, they are more likely to check out your website again, which leads to more sales.

Modify your website content to accommodate visitors from all around the world. Try to create many variations of the same site in different languages. This will allow you to get more traffic and reach a lot more customers on a global level. If people are able to read your content in their own language, it?s much more likely that they?ll purchase something from you.

Placing wording in advertisements that assures people of instant gratification is helpful for just about any service or product Let your customers know how fast it takes to place an order, how quickly that order will be shipped and how little time it takes to see results. You need to then offer a fast checkout or rapidly confirm any orders placed on your site, to live up to your claims.

TIP! Focus your website around fresh, original content as much as possible. Your priority should be to pass as much knowledge as you can to consumers about your products.

Oftentimes, marketing consultant services are prohibitively expensive for small business owners. Luckily, the internet has a wealth of information to help you. There are forums where you can interact with other business professionals, as well as conferences and articles.

You are going to need to build and maintain trust with your customers. When you are coming up with your marketing ideas, make sure all of the information that you plan on using can be supported with facts. Make sure that you have the documentation necessary to back up test results, endorsements, and testimonials.

Anonymity is a part of doing business online. This is a great method for smaller owned businesses to use. Especially if they have to focus on personal relationships in order to gain customers.

TIP! When writing content for your site, you should use italics and bolding to help get the message across. Tools like bold, italics, and underline are ways to make a word more important than the surrounding words.

Encourage your customers to participate on your site in a way that makes them thing they are calling the shots. This is so important with a market filled with spam. But if they feel that they?re dictating the search and that they?re not being coerced into anything, they?re more likely to trust your site.

To compete with today?s type of website marketing, you need to open a social media profile on popular sites. Make sure, however, that you do not send information to people who didn?t request it; this can quickly turn off potential customers.

Offer to give a certain percentage of your business profits to charity to increase the amount of visitors. This should be clearly advertised, though not too excessively, on your website. You needn?t have to give a huge portion of your profits in order for this gesture to impress your audience.

TIP! When your website is created effectively, it will help you become more visible. This will give your viewers an easier time as they view your site.

Offer a money back guarantee to your customers. Such policies will put your customers at ease and give you a respectable and trusted persona. By placing the risk on yourself and guaranteeing your products or services, customers will feel better about trusting you.

For any strong and effective marketing plan, excellent content is the foundation. It is in your best interest to constantly monitor your content and make sure your customers are getting the information you want. Another good idea is to have someone else edit your content before publication. There is nothing more valuable than a fresh perspective. Of course, run your work through a spell check and grammar check to correct any errors.

Although Online marketing is the sort of field that can take a lifetime to master, it?s not hard to pick up enough basic knowledge to become a successful online marketer. Even those who are considered experts in the field are constantly finding out about the most recent tricks and tips, so keep in mind that keeping abreast of this industry is a continual learning process.

You can't buy rights to name exoplanet, says astronomy group

IAU/L. Cal?ada

The diversity of exoplanets is large ? more than 800 planets outside the Solar System have been found to date, with thousands more waiting to be confirmed.

By Megan Gannon, SPACE.com

There may not be an alien planet named Heinlein any time soon if the International Astronomical Union (IAU) gets its way. The astronomy group issued a reminder April 12 that it is the only body authorized to give exoplanets their official names, despite recent naming initiatives by companies like Uwingu.

In the statement, IAU?officials said that planet-naming schemes have "no bearing on the official naming process," and stressed the importance of having a unified procedure, even though its members welcome the public's interest. The IAU did not mention the space science funding company Uwingu (whose name means "sky" in Swahili)?by name, referring only to a "recent name-selling campaign." But the young Uwingu did launch an initiative last month calling on the public to name the nearest Alpha Centauri Bb ? an?exoplanet?4.3 light-years from Earth ? as part of a fundraising campaign.

Projects like Uwingu's?Baby Planet Name Book?seek to at least informally replace official planet names like HD 85512b or Gliese 667Cc with more playful nicknames. The initiative by Uwingu ? a company that aims to raise money for space research, exploration and education ? lets you add a nomination to the planet name registry for 99 cents. [Strangest Alien Planets (Photos)]

And for another 99 cents, you can vote for your favorite name on the list. In March, Uwingu started an offshoot contest, which runs through April 15, to?name Alpha Centauri Bb, the newfound Earth-sized planet in the star system closest to our own.?The company will use the money raised by the project to support research efforts like SETI's (the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) Allen Telescope Array in California, as well as space launches and science outreach.

Uwingu CEO Alan Stern, a planetary scientist who also leads NASA's New Horizons spacecraft's mission to Pluto, said the IAU's claim to naming rights in space is a self-proclaimed one, and likened Uwingu's effort to a People's Choice endeavour.?

"The IAU can't prohibit what it does not control. People's Choice naming contests and the colloquial naming of objects in space are unrelated to the IAU's purview of specifying nomenclature for astronomers," Stern told SPACE.com in an email. "The IAU no more owns the right to control the naming of objects in space for popular purposes than does a county that controls street naming have the right to deny people in the county who the right to ?adopt a mile of highway in someone's honor."

In the Uwingu campaign, the names Ron Paul, Heinlein, Sagan, Asimov and Pele are currently among some of the more popular monikers that have been proposed so far. Official exoplanet names, often made up of a string of letters and numbers, may look dull and unmemorable in comparison, but IAU officials defended their process.

"While?exoplanet?names such as 16 Cygni Bb or HD 41004 Ab may seem boring when considering the names of planets in our own solar system, the vast number of objects in our universe ? galaxies, stars, and planets to name just a few ? means that a clear and systematic system for naming these objects is vital," IAU officials explained. "Any naming system is a scientific issue that must also work across different languages and cultures in order to support collaborative worldwide research and avoid confusion."

Related: Cosmic Log ? Uwingu venture wants to give Alpha Centauri Bb a snappier planet name

To be clear, Uwingu has said the nominations in its Baby Planet Name Book won't be official. But the organization had hoped astronomers might come around and consider using the names on the list to refer to new planets informally.?

"At Uwingu, we're for opening up the naming of celestial bodies to as wide a spectrum of the public as possible, the IAU seems to want to go the opposite way," Stern said. "We think open-source naming it the future, and we're excited that so many in the public agree."

The International Astronomical Union was founded in 1919 to promote and safeguard the science of astronomy through international cooperation. The organization is the same one that officially demoted Pluto from a full-fledged planet to its current dwarf planet status in 2006.

For more information on the planet-naming contest,?visit Uwingu's website here.

This story was updated on April 13 to include new comments from Uwingu CEO Alan Stern.

(AP) ? Voters who kept Hugo Chavez in office for 14 years were deciding Sunday whether to elect the devoted lieutenant he chose to carry on the revolution that endeared him to the poor but that many Venezuelans believe is ruining the nation.

Across Caracas, trucks blaring bugle calls awoke Venezuelans long before dawn in the ruling socialists' traditional election day get-out-the-vote tactic. This time, they also boomed Chavez's voice singing the national anthem.

Nicolas Maduro was riding on Chavez's endorsement with a campaign largely silent on the issues but freighted with personal attacks that was otherwise little more than an unflagging tribute to the polarizing leader who died of cancer March 5.

Chavez's longtime Chavez foreign minister pinned his hopes on the immense loyalty for his boss among millions of poor beneficiaries of a socialist government's largesse and the heft of a state apparatus that Chavez skillfully consolidated.

The governing United Socialist Party of Venezuela deployed a well-worn get-out-the-vote machine spearheaded by loyal state employees. It also enjoyed a pervasive state media apparatus as part of a near monopoly on institutional power.

Challenger Henrique Capriles' aides accused Chavista loyalists in the judiciary of putting them at glaring disadvantage by impoverishing the campaign and opposition broadcast media by targeting them with unwarranted fines and prosecutions.

Capriles' main campaign weapon was simply to point out "the incompetence of the state," as he put it to reporters Saturday night.

Maduro, 50, was still favored, but his early big lead in opinion polls halved over the past two weeks in a country struggling with the legacy of Chavez's management of the world's largest oil reserves. Millions of Venezuelans were lifted out of poverty under Chavez, but many also believe that his confederates not only squandered but also plundered much of the $1 trillion in oil revenues during his time in office.

People are fed up with chronic power outages, crumbling infrastructure, unfinished public works projects, double-digit inflation, food and medicine shortages and rampant crime that has given Venezuela among the world's highest homicide and kidnapping rates.

"We can't continue to believe in messiahs," said Jose Romero, a 48-year-old industrial engineer who voted for Capriles in the central city of Valencia. "This country has learned a lot and today we know that one person can't fix everything."

In Caracas, 59-year-old street vendor Jose Alzualde said he believed, however, that "Chavez's legacy should continue." He said Venezuela "needs a united country in order to advance. There are political divisions that should end."

Capriles is a 40-year-old state governor who lost to Chavez in October's presidential election by a nearly 11-point margin, the best showing ever by a challenger to the longtime president.

He showed Maduro none of the respect he had accorded Chavez. Maduro hit back hard, at one point calling Capriles' backers "heirs of Hitler." It was an odd accusation considering that Capriles is the grandson of Holocaust survivors from Poland.

"Capriles ran a remarkable campaign that shows he has creativity, tenacity and disposition to play political hardball," said David Smilde, an analyst with the Washington Office on Latin America think tank.

At his campaign rallies, Capriles would read out a list of unfinished road, bridge and rail projects. Then he asked people what goods were scarce on store shelves. The opposition contends Chavez looted the treasury last year to buy re-election with government largesse. It also complains about the steady flow of cut-rate oil to Cuba, which Capriles says will end if he is elected.

Venezuela's $30 billion fiscal deficit accounts for about 10 percent of gross domestic product.

Maduro, a former union activist and bus driver with close ties to Cuba's leaders, constantly alleged that Capriles was conspiring with U.S. putschists to destabilize Venezuela and even suggested Washington had infected Chavez with the cancer that killed him.

He focused his campaign message on his mentor: "I am Chavez. We are all Chavez" and promised to expand anti-poverty programs.

Michael Shifter of the Inter-American Dialogue think tank said Maduro campaigned "ineptly," trying too hard to "replay the Chavez script" and alienating moderate Chavistas.

Whoever wins Sunday will face no end of hard choices.

Many factories operate at half capacity because strict currency controls make it hard for them to pay for imported parts and materials. Business leaders say some companies are on verging on bankruptcy because they are unable to extend lines of credit with foreign suppliers.

Chavez imposed currency controls a decade ago trying to stem capital flight as his government expropriated large land parcels and dozens of businesses. Now, dollars sell on the black market at three times the official exchange rate and Maduro has had to devalue Venezuela's currency, the bolivar, twice this year.

Meanwhile, consumers grumble that stores are short of milk, butter, corn flour and other staples. The government blames hoarding, while the opposition points at the price controls imposed by Chavez in an attempt to bring down double-digit inflation.

A 40-year-old lawyer who sometimes works with the government said as he walked with his wife and two small children to the polls in central Caracas that he was fed up and voting for Capriles.

"But I can't say that openly because I could lose work," said the man, who would only give his first name, Marcelino.

"But we can't have fear," his wife, Lisette Ruiz, told him. "If Maduro wins everything is going to get worse."

Capriles said he will reverse land expropriations, which he says have ruined many farms and forced Venezuela to import food after previously being a net exporter of beef, rice, coffee and other foods. But even Capriles said currency and price controls cannot be immediately scrapped without triggering a disastrous run on the bolivar.

High international oil prices remain a boon for Venezuela, underpinning its economy. Chavez spent $500 billion to bolster social programs, trimming the poverty rate from 50 percent to about 30 percent.

But critics say the government has misused the oil industry, ordering the state oil company PDVSA into food distribution and financing of social programs while neglecting needed investment, causing production and refining to drop.

Venezuela's oil revenue is down from $5.6 billion five years ago to $3.8 billion in 2012, and PDVSA's debt climbed to $40 billion last year. The country even imports 100,000 barrels a day of gasoline from the United States.

Two hikers missing in Washington state after avalanche

By Karen Brooks

(Reuters) - Two hikers were missing after at least one avalanche struck the mountains in Washington state on Saturday in an area east of Seattle that is a popular location for winter sports, a King County sheriff's spokeswoman said.

Sergeant Katie Larson said that a 60-year-old man who had been hiking with two companions went missing at around noon local time after an avalanche struck near Snoqualmie Pass in the Cascade Mountains, about an hour east of Seattle.

A second hiker received a non-life-threatening shoulder injury after the incident, she told Reuters.

In an apparent separate incident nearby, another person who had been among a group of 13 people hiking at the Alpental Ski Area was also reported missing, although Larson said the nature of that incident was not immediately clear.

"At some point something happened; we're not sure if it was an avalanche or an accident," Larson said, citing the remote location and communication difficulties with the hikers, who did not speak fluent English.

One hiker from that group suffered hypothermia and was being brought out of the mountains by rescuers, who have a two-and-a-half hour hike to where the group is located, Larson said.

"Obviously right now we're trying to (get) there as quickly as we can we before the weather conditions worsen and before nightfall," she said, adding that more heavy snowfall was expected in the area.

The King County Sheriff's Office had said earlier on social media that three people were missing in two avalanches, but Larson indicated that the number of missing had since been reduced to two.

Serbia rejects EU-brokered Kosovo deal

BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) ? Serbia rejected on Monday a European Union-brokered deal for reconciliation with its former province of Kosovo ? a defiant move that could jeopardize the Balkan country's EU membership aspirations and fuel tensions in the region.

The EU had given Serbia until Tuesday to say whether it would relinquish its effective control over northern Kosovo in exchange for the start of Serbia's EU membership negotiations.

Even before the government rejection, Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic ? Serbia's most powerful governing party leader who also serves as the defense minister ? said the plan is unacceptable because it does not give more autonomy to minority ethnic Serbs in Kosovo who together with Serbia reject Kosovo's 2008 declaration of independence.

"The Serbian government cannot accept the proposed principles ... because they do not guarantee full security, survival and protection of human rights for the Serbs in Kosovo," Prime Minister Ivica Dacic said. "Such an agreement could not be implemented and would not lead to a lasting and sustainable solution."

Catherine Ashton, the EU's foreign policy chief, said after the eighth round of talks between Serbian and Kosovo officials last week in Brussels that she wanted a response from both sides and that the bloc's mediation was over.

Despite warnings that there will be no more EU-sponsored mediation, Vucic and the government called for more talks with the rival ethnic Albanians leaders of Kosovo.

"If there is a negative answer from (the EU), that would be bad news for Serbia, Kosovo and the EU," Vucic said. "If that happens, we would have to start thinking of what to do next.

"We don't want Serbia isolated from the world, but we have to protect our interests. It is highly important that we reach an agreement."

In a statement issued after Serbia's rejection, Ashton called on Belgrade "to make a last effort to reach an agreement, for the benefit of their people." But while she made no mention of formally extending the negotiation process, she said she hoped to lead "the discussion in the EU over the next few days in support of a real step forward by both Serbia and Kosovo towards their European future."

The rejection of the proposal could severely hamper Serbia's EU membership aspirations ? which would include millions of dollars of promised accession funds. The rejection also could lead to more tensions in the Balkans, which is still reeling from the bloody wars of the 1990s when Serbia tried to prevent the breakup of the former Yugoslav federation by force.

While some 90 countries ? including the United States and most EU nations ? have recognized Kosovo's 2008 declaration of independence, it has been rejected by Serbia and ally Russia.

The most contentious issue in the talks was the status of northern Kosovo, where ethnic Serbs dominate the population and refuse to accept the authority of the ethnic Albanian-controlled government in Kosovo's capital, Pristina.

Germany has made giving up control of Kosovo's north the key condition for the start of Serbia's EU accession negotiations.

The stumbling block in the talks was a Serbian demand that ethnic Serbs, who represent about 10 percent of Kosovo's 2 million people, have their own judiciary and police force. But Kosovo officials have rejected that, saying it would be tantamount to a division of Kosovo into two separate entities.

In Serbia, there are increasing calls among nationalists that Serbia should turn to its ally Russia instead of becoming an EU member. There also are suggestions from hardliners that Serbia should use force to reoccupy Kosovo, which it surrendered after a three-month NATO bombing campaign that pushed out its troops in 1999.

Vucic, a former ultranationalist turned moderate, said a military solution is out of the question.

"I'm hearing some 'heroes' who were never brave who are giving us lessons on how we should stroll into Pristina," he said. "They should not tell us what our decisions should be."

Several hundred far-right supporters demonstrated in front of the government headquarters in Belgrade during the Cabinet session, demanding that no deal is signed with the EU and Kosovo's leaders.

Garbage men can do nothing as teen crushed in truck

By Ben Deighton, Reuters

A French teenager who had hidden inside a garbage container was crushed to death inside a trash truck in Luxembourg on Saturday, police said.

Garbage men discovered the 17-year-old only when he shouted out as they emptied the container into the back of the truck early on Saturday morning, but by then he was already in the grasp of the crushing mechanism.

"He cried out, but it was already too late," a spokeswoman for Luxembourg police said on Monday.

The young man, whose name was not released, died on the scene, in the city of Luxembourg.

Police have opened an investigation.

Consoles for more than gaming

For a long time now all three big console companies say they want to have their hardware be more than a gaming machine. They want it to be a media and social center. I get the appeal of an all-in-one machine, but as a gamer does anyone else feel frustrated about this focus on social media?

Take the PS4, apparently it makes sharing of gameplay footage easier and improves connectivity in all sorts of ways. Except I don't really care about that. The only reason I buy a gaming console is to play games on it. I could care less about sharing my stuff with the rest of the people. If that's your thing, then cool, but in my opinion most of the videos people upload aren't anything to write home about anyway. I don't want or need to be connected to facebook or whatever all the time. I bought it to play games and I wish they'd spend more effort on making an absolutely monster gaming machine than a social media center.

Am I alone in this feeling? It frustrates me that a lot of the "exciting" press releases are about more social media stuff. What about getting good games for release or making sure your online network is secure and stays online? It just seems to me that they lost focus on what a gaming console should be at its core. So is social media on your console important to you? I just get the feeling they overestimate the importance of it and kind of let down their supposed core audience.

Sands Casino rolls dice, loses all in NLRB ruling ? Business ...

The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has ruled against the Sands Casino in Bethlehem, holding that the casino violated the National Labor Relations Act when it refused to bar??gain in good faith with the casino guards? duly-elected union, the Law Enforcement Employees Bene??vo??lent Association (LEEBA).

The casino tried several arguments to show that the association wasn?t a legitimate bargaining unit. It contended the association was really an affiliate of the United Steelworkers because it used a union hall owned by a Steelworkers local. It also alleged the LEEBA was an affiliate of a labor organization called the Putnam Nurses Association. And it said a LEEBA official improperly at??tempted to influence the vote by giving four guards free baseball tickets.

The Sands had initially also claimed LEEBA manipulated work assignments and threatened and intimidated guards into voting for representation.

When the NLRB dismissed all those objections, the casino turned to challenging the board?s own legitimacy. It argued that the NLRB didn?t have legal standing to rule because some of its members had been Obama administration recess appointments who had been named when the U.S. Senate was not technically in recess.

That didn?t work either. The NLRB overruled every objection as either not being fact-based or having too little effect to change the election results.

The Sands must now negotiate with the union in good faith and post a notice of the NLRB ruling.

NEW ORLEANS, April 7, 2013 What was in Dr. F. G. Johnson's French Female Pills and other scientifically untested elixirs, nostrums and other quack cures that were the only medicines available to sick people during the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries?

Scientists provided a glimpse today based on an analysis of a museum collection of patent medicines used in turn-of-the-century America. It was part of the 245th National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society, the world's largest scientific society, which is being held here this week.

Mark Benvenuto, Ph.D, who headed the study, explained that hundreds of untested products were sold in stores, by mail order or in traveling medicine shows during the patent medicine era. The products were called "patent medicines" not because they had been granted a government patent, but from an unrelated term that originated in 17th century England.

"This was an era long before the controlled clinical trials and federal regulations that ensure the safety and effectiveness of the medicines we take today," Benvenuto explained. "Many patent medicines had dangerous ingredients, not just potentially toxic substances like arsenic, mercury and lead, but cocaine, heroin and high concentrations of alcohol."

The samples came from the collection of the Henry Ford Museum, in Dearborn, Mich. The museum houses artifacts celebrating American inventors of various items, including planes, cars, trains, machines, furniture and more. The 50 patent medicines in the analysis were among hundreds in the museum's Health Aids collection. The results of Benvenuto's study are on display at the museum.

Undergraduate students working under Benvenuto's supervision performed the bulk of the research. Andrew Diefenbach, a senior and mechanical engineering major at the university, presented the group's research in a talk here today. He got involved in the project as a freshman in Benvenuto's general chemistry course. "I'm interested to see what other comments people have, and what kind of things they may have thought of that we haven't thought of so far that we can use to further the research," Diefenbach said.

Some of the ingredients in the samples of old patent medicines, including calcium and zinc, actually could have been healthy and are mainstays in modern dietary supplements, said Benvenuto. He is with the University of Detroit Mercy. But others were clearly dangerous. Analysis of Dr. F. G. Johnson's French Female Pills, for instance, revealed iron, calcium and zinc. But the nostrum also contained lead, which is potentially toxic. Others contained mercury, another potentially toxic heavy metal, and arsenic.

Benvenuto explained that the presence of heavy metals may have been due to contamination. On the other hand, there actually was a rationale for including some of them. Arsenic and mercury were mainstays for treatment of syphilis, for instance.

Abstract

A selected grouping of patent medicines, permanently housed in the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, MI, has been analyzed by energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) spectroscopy as well as proton NMR. The materials in this study were all manufactured over a century ago under clandestine circumstances, and thus the ingredients and recipes have never been available to the public. The findings for metals and organic materials in these items are presented and discussed.

10 States Making The Most On Beer: 24/7 Wall St.

24/7 Wall St.:

Most states rely on a relatively small number of industries for much their employment and economic activity. The industries that come to mind are auto manufacturing, defense, government, financial services and agriculture.

As it turns out, the brewing and wholesaling of beer can be added to the list for several states, including Colorado and Missouri. This beer economy can thrive in the United States because there are so many beer drinkers ? 6.38 billion gallons of beer were consumed in America in 2011, which is roughly equivalent to the amount of milk consumed that year.
