Boeing sends 787 on test flight from Seattle

(AP) ? Boeing sent a 787 up on a test flight Saturday, the first since the new airliner was grounded three weeks ago because of a battery fire.

The aircraft took off from Boeing Field in Seattle and spent nearly two and a half hours flying back and forth over the inland Columbia Plateau. It landed at Boeing Field shortly before 3 p.m. PST. According to flight-tracking website FlightAware, the aircraft flew for 1,131 miles, slightly more than the 919 planned.

The Federal Aviation Administration granted permission for test flights on Thursday.

The 787 is the first commercial airliner to rely heavily on lithium-ion batteries, the same kind used in cellphones. Each plane has two of the 63-pound blue power bricks, one near the front to provide power to the cockpit if the engines stop, and one near the back to start up the auxiliary power unit, which is essentially a backup generator.

On Jan. 7, a battery on a plane that had recently landed in Boston short-circuited and caught fire. Nine days later, a battery on an All Nippon Airways plane started smoking, forcing an emergency landing in Japan. Boeing said Saturday's flight was to assess the in-flight performance of the batteries. Data would be used to support continuing investigations of the recent incidents.

Boeing Co. has billions of dollars tied up in research on the 787, and billions more dollars in 787s parked in Everett, Wash., and other sites that are waiting to be delivered.

Birth Control - I'm Pregnant? But I Took Precautions - ...

I'm Pregnant? But I Took Precautions 0 5

Unintentional Pregnancy Vladimir Ceresna/PhotoSpin

Every year, millions of women get pregnant in the United States. Many pregnancies are planned and welcomed, but a surprising number of babies are born as a result of unplanned pregnancies.

According to an NBC News article on the topic, over one-third of pregnancies are unplanned or unintended. The statistic has remained relatively the same since 1982. That means that one in three babies is conceived unintentionally.

CBS News said that three million pregnancies are unplanned every year, yet ?the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says 99 percent of women having sex had used at least one method of birth control between 2006 and 2008.?

Even though precautions are taken, the chance of getting pregnant still exists.

Young sexually active people in particular are susceptible to pregnancies. Some are using contraceptives in the wrong manner or aren't using any methods of preventing pregnancy.

Hoping pregnancy won't happen is not a safe or realistic option. Sooner or later, not using contraceptives while being sexually active could result in pregnancy.

A large percentage of girls are taking oral contraceptives such as the Pill to prevent pregnancy, but they take it irregularly. This increases the risk of conceiving accidentally.

?A new study shows that women who use birth control pills, the patch or vaginal ring are 20 times more likely to have an unintended pregnancy than those who use an intrauterine device (IUD) or implant,? according to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine and mentioned in the CBS article.

The study, which consisted of 7,500 sexually active female participants ranging in age from 14-45, asked the women to choose a method of contraception to prevent pregnancy for a year.

?They were each instructed about the benefits and side effects of IUDs, implant, birth control pills, patch, ring and contraceptive injection and then allowed to chose which one they wanted to use free of charge? said the CBS News article. Then they were interviewed at three-month intervals by researchers.

Abnormal brain development in fetuses of obese women

Feb. 11, 2013 ? In a study to be presented on February 15 between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. PST, at the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine's annual meeting, The Pregnancy Meeting ?, in San Francisco, California, researchers from Tufts Medical Center will present findings showing the effects of maternal obesity on a fetus, specifically in the development of the brain.

The study, conducted at the Mother Infant Research Institute (MIRI) at Tufts Medical Center in Boston, Mass., looked at the fetal development of 16 pregnant women, eight obese and eight lean, to see what effects maternal obesity had on fetal gene expression. Researchers have found that fetuses of obese women had differences in gene expression as early as the second trimester, compared to fetuses of women who were a healthy weight. Of particular note were patterns of gene expression suggestive of abnormal brain development in fetuses of obese women.

During gestation, fetuses go through apoptosis, a developmental process of programmed cell death. However, fetuses of the obese women were observed to have decreased apoptosis, which is an important part of normal fetal neurodevelopment. Dr. Diana Bianchi, senior author of the study and executive director of MIRI, describes apoptosis as a pruning process, clearing out space for new growth.

"Women won't be surprised to hear being obese while pregnant can lead to obesity in the child," said Dr. Andrea Edlow, lead author of the study and fellow in Maternal-Fetal Medicine at Tufts Medical Center. "But what might surprise them is the potential effect it has on the brain development of their unborn child."

It is too early to know the implications of their findings, but maternal obesity is a rapidly growing problem in the U.S., with one in three women being obese at conception. The conclusion of the study points to the role of gene expression studies such as this one in helping elucidate possible mechanisms for recently-described postnatal neurodevelopmental abnormalities in children of obese women, including increased rates of autism and altered hypothalamic appetite regulation.

The research team hopes their findings and any future data will push women looking to become pregnant to be healthier, minimizing risk to their child.

Drs. Bianchi and Edlow, say the next step in their research will be to use a mouse model to examine the genes that are differentially expressed in fetuses of obese women, genes that may be involved in abnormal fetal neurodevelopment.

In addition to Edlow and Bianchi, research was conducted by Neeta Vora of Tufts Medical Center and University of North Carolina Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine.; Lisa Hui, of Tufts Medical Center, Mother Infant Research Institute, Boston, Mass.; Heather Wick, of Tufts University Department of Computer Science, Medford, Mass.; and Janet Cowan, of Tufts Medical Center Department of Pathology, Boston, Mass.

Cloudrobot hands-on: robot pugilists throw bombs, drop jaws

Cloudrobot hands-on

Cloudrobot is, potentially, the worst name we've ever heard for a product. Thankfully, if this robotic pugilist ever does come to market, we're pretty confident it'll be under a different brand. These fighters are not nearly as cute or pocketable as the Battroborgs that punched their way through the Engadget compound recently. In fact, these guys are down right intimidating. The product of six developers and engineers based out of Budapest, the 16-inch tall bots pack 21 motors, controlled by an AVR chip, that allow them a stunning range of motion and precision. The movements themselves are passed to the bot by a computer, which is currently running a crude simulation / video game. The punches, blocks and footwork are all triggered by a standard gamepad connected via Bluetooth.

Rather than risk serious damage to these expensive machines, their all metal bodies are protected from blows by Everlast-branded boxing gloves. And, in fact, they rarely come in contact with each other (at least in their current form). For now points are counted in the virtual environment, rather than in landed hooks and jabs. Which might not be bad since the bots gain quite a bit of mustard on their shots thanks to electromagnets in their feet that keep them anchored to the ring. Primarily those magnets are for stability, so that the occasional glancing blow doesn't send them toppling over, but it also lets them "sit down" on their punches, just like a real boxer. The company is currently looking for an American partner to help them produce and market the robots. It also has a rather ambitious target price of $300 per combatant, which may have them making some tradeoffs in the final design. The best thing we can do, though, is let Cloudrobot speak for itself, so check out the video after the break.

Broadband Access and Human Rights ? Global Wire Associates

Computer-Access

Between attending the Federal Communications Commission?s Broadband Summit and hosting our own?broadband webinar last week, we are bursting with ideas on the subject. ?Broadband access is now viewed by many as the new digital divide. ?In the United States, 19 million people don?t have high-speed Internet access, and 14 million of those without access live in rural areas. ?While there have been many efforts by grassroots activists, tech firms and policy makers to close the digital gap, many are advocating that broadband is a human rights issue and that universal access is the only solution to the problem.

During a recent conversation on the subject, Susan Crawford, former Obama adviser and author of Captive Audiences, said that one of the main barriers to access is the high price for broadband being charged by a monopoly of telecommunications firms.

?A hundred years ago, many people thought that electricity was a luxury,? she said. ??It took a decade to make sure everyone had electricity. ?At the time there were special interest groups that wanted to make sure only rich people had it. ?We succeeded as a nation because we realized that it was better for everyone?s quality of life to have electricity.?

Universal broadband access improves everyone?s quality of life by leveling the playing field for marginalized communities. ?Many things we do in our lives are now required to be done online, like applying for jobs and other resources or accessing health records. ?Furthermore, the Internet is no longer dial-up friendly. ?The vast majority of websites today are designed to be viewed using high-speed Internet.

But what about mobile phones? ?Yes, mobile technology has greatly helped to reduce the digital divide. ?As a matter of fact, it is expected that more people will access the Internet on their mobiles than on a PC by this year. ?But there are limitations to using mobiles as well, such as slower connections based on what carrier is used and smaller screens. ?It is also harder to type long-form documents like resumes and term papers on a mobile.

But what about public libraries? ?Yes, public libraries have led the path to more Internet access in marginalized communities. ?However, most libraries have time limits on computer use, and because many times they are not well maintained, the computers may have viruses and break easily and often. ?Also, some librarians are not digitally literate and are not the most useful in helping those seeking computer help, although this is changing in many communities.

During the Broadband Summit, Rep. Doris Matsui said she was planning on reintroducing the Broadband Affordability Act in Congress in the next few weeks. ?The bill would require ?the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to establish a broadband lifeline program enabling qualifying low-income customers residing in urban and rural areas to purchase broadband service at reduced charges by reimbursing providers for each such customer served.? ?The Act would also mandate that it ?be similar in structure to the Lifeline program for basic telephone service,?prevent awarding duplicate subsidies for an individual eligible household, and?promote competition from broadband service providers by using neutral technology.?

But this is not just an issue of price. ?There is also a good number of people who don?t have access because they are digitally illiterate, don?t understand why having broadband access is relevant in their lives and/or have a distrust for sensitive Internet activities, like online banking. ?During both the summit and our webinar, we got many ideas on how to convince more people to support better broadband access. ?Many of these ideas are already being implemented by many government agencies and organizations, including Global Wire Associates.
